More Awful Things: No, Conservative is NOT the new gay

http://politics.carpedmi.com/2010/02/conservative-the-new-%E2%80%9Cgay%E2%80%9D/#…really?

i can’t even find the right words to use here, beyond…just because you feel outnumbered because you’re in a predominately liberal area, that’s going to be true of pretty much any ideology where you’re in the minority. And mind you, the gay comparison hardly works when your ideology’s backing the most-watched  cable TV news channel by a wide margin and has the top talk radio hosts - 2 of whom your site mentions on your sidebar. Oh my, you are so oppressed. I lament your regrettable position in life. Of course, maybe the reason that people sneer at you so much is your utter lack of perspective on issues? I mean, trying to compare being conservative to being gay (despite your excuse that you know it’s not the same) is NOT in any way, shape, or form comparable. I have a good feeling that the number of people being beaten, murdered, or discriminated against for being conservative is far less than those for being gay. Think about it sometime. Being conservative and being sneered at because you’re doing so is far better than being a part of any other kind of minority. Like America’s least trusted minority, for example. Being conservative in a liberal area is NOTHING.

Super Bowl Ads: Everything Sucks.

Things that didn’t suck: The Google Ad: Not obnoxious, fantastic storytelling, and it showed how to use the product properly, even if it was Google.

Dorito’s Ads: Nothing great, but nothing godawful either. Dorito Samurai was funny, though.Things that did suck:
Every other ad: Pretty much every other ad. I mean, seriously - what the hell. There were maybe a couple other not awful ones (Betty White/Abe Vigoda Snickers ad wasn’t bad), but how bad were the ads this year? They made the Tim Tebow ad seem not like an abomination. Especially since there was a real abomination…

OH MY GOD THE AUDI GREEN POLICE AD:
How awful was that? I officially have no respect for Audi for making this commercial. I renounce any environmentalistic tendencies I may have ever had. I’m going to start using disposable styrofoam plates, and then burning them to heat my apartment.

Also, Cheap Trick can go fuck off for allowing that awful bastardization of their song. Science damn you. Then again, I think that this may be the perfect counterpoint to the Focus on the Family Tebow ad - yeah, your kid may be the next Tebow, but he could be the next environmentalist douchebag asshole. Better safe than sorry.

That may be the most awful thing I’ve ever written. But not as awful as the ad, which makes me feel better about myself.

Greatest ad placement ever.

That, or it’s more proof that the Dante’s Inferno game needs to die.

Why Support "Save Chuck" and not Dollhouse or Better Off Ted? (h/t: @suprcharger5150) (tags: TV, serious business, chuck)

I fully expected to be called out on my last Better Off Ted/Dollhouse post about my Chuck fandom and thinking the show should be saved. Thank you, Liz. Well, here’s why: saving it could be justified: Unlike Better Off Ted and Dollhouse, Chuck has actually maintained respectable ratings (and in a very competitive timeslot) to where renewing the show was a realistic possibility, not just because of fanwankery. Its 18-49 demographic rating was in line with NBC’s average last year, despite NBC having the lowest ratings among the 4 major broadcast networks. If NBC hadn’t lost, er, given 5 hours of primetime to Jay Leno, the show probably wouldn’t have had such a dramatic renewal process. Chuck’s improved ratings plus expanded primetime schedule make its renewal more certain than last year, although NBC does have that similarly-themed JJ Abrams spy show Undercovers coming. And it is NBC. Basically, I’m far more likely to support something if I know it isn’t futile from the start. Dollhouse and Better Off Ted were renewed under such odd and unexpected circumstances (Dollhouse’s budget was cut to near cable levels, and Better Off Ted…it must be a budget thing as well, or blackmail was involved) in the first place and have yet to see any reason why they would even realistically be saved that I’m not going to waste my time with those campaigns. Sure, all the Chuck fan campaigns did was get NBC some good PR (and saying ‘the fans saved the show’ makes them feel special, true or not), and maybe that Subway deal (that has yet to see fruition on the show) but really, it came down to the fact that the show had respectable ratings and it could have its budget cut.

I’m a bit too cynical in that sense, perhaps, and I could totally see where there are maybe flaws in my arguments - the point may be that I’m not going to waste my time on something I find ultimately futile like trying to save shows that aren’t going to be saved anyway. I say this, and somehow Better Off Ted will get a 3rd season, to be watched by 243 people exactly. Not that I’ll be complaining. And of course, I’ve gone on plenty of futile endeavors in my everyday life, so I freely admit I’m being something of a hypocrite here. But I’ve come to peace with that.

Other People Sum Up My Thoughts On: iPad

The iPhone was a success because it let you do more with a phone, easier. This does less than a laptop.

Exactly. The iPhone does more than phones. The iPad does less than laptops. Seriously. Why do we need this thing?

@thetechguychris it just seems to me to be more of an issue of “Be a decent human being and don’t assault someone just because they’re of a different sexuality” rather than kicking out gay people for being gay because it might set off some people who never learned to not beat up their coworkers for being different (even in an intensely stressful life and death environment) - changing behavior is harder but it’s the better way, what we need to strive for rather than just kicking out ready and willing homosexuals.

Dear Better Off Ted Fans (and Dollhouse fans too, I guess)

Yes, it sucks that Better Off Ted is likely getting canceled. Yes, American TV viewers are fucking stupid for not watching it. But let’s be honest - ABC promoted the show a bunch before its premiere last year (did they promote it well? Hard to say. I had trouble getting interested in it until I sat down and actually watched it and caught up on the episodes I missed later), and people just plain did not watch it - the ratings were abysmal for season 1. That the show somehow managed to get renewed was a miracle, and we shouldn’t be angry about the fact that ABC gave us a second season of this hilarious little show, at all. We got a second season we shouldn’t have, and it was awesome. Enjoy what we had, not what we’re going to miss. And then go watch Parks and Recreation on NBC. It needs all the support it can get. Bonus: Replace “Better Off Ted” and “ABC” with “Dollhouse” and “FOX” in that paragraph for a second post for the price of one!

The Onion got Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof to do a video about how annoying Lost fans are.

Oh, The Onion. You slay me. And great job getting the executive producers to come on too.
